I’m a stickler for maintenance on my cars and I do an oil change every 3000 miles pretty much like clockwork!
This is the procedure for performing an oil change on a 2007 GMC Envoy with a 4.2 Liter inline six. This procedure can be followed for any vehicle that has this motor in it. The Chevy Trailblazer, Isuzu Ascender, and Buick Rainier all came equipped with this engine.
First off, you will need a ½ inch socket or wrench and a 13mm socket or wrench
An oil filter wrench
An oil drain pan to drain the oil into.
7 quarts of 5w30 oil, I use Synthetic but any motor oil of this weight would be fine.
And an Oil Filter. For this change I used a Fram Ultra XG9837 Filter.
The first thing you need to do is unscrew the oil fill cap. This can be done later on but I always do it first.
Remove The Oil Cap
Next you will need to remove the 4 ½ bolts that are holding the plastic skid plate on. This is there to protect the oil pan from damage should you decide to do some off roading.
Remove The Skid Plate Bolts
Get your oil drain pan ready and place it underneath the oil drain plug. The oil drain plug is a 13mm bolt. Remove this bolt and let the oil drain out.
Remove The Oil Drain Plug
Once the oil has been drained from the pan, you will want to remove the oil filter. The oil filter is on the passenger side of the engine and can be reached by sticking your hand between the oil pan and the frame rails. The picture below is taken from that vantage point.
I typically cannot loosen the oil filter by hand so I squeeze an oil filter wrench up through the opening and place it on the oil filter. Before I start to loosen the filter I place the oil catch can in a position under the filter to catch as much oil as possible. You will get oil on you, but as long as it’s cool you should be fine. Just loosen the filter using the wrench, remember lefty loosey righty tighty!
Use The Oil Filter Wrench To Remove The Filter
It Can Be Messy!
Next you will put the new oil filter on. Before attaching the new filter, you will want to open one of the new quarts of oil and put a layer of oil around the seal of the filter. This will create a seal against the mounting point of the filter. Now, you will attach the filter to the engine, this should be done by hand only. Twist the filter on as tight as possible by hand and leave it there! Now you can put the 13mm oil drain plug back and reattach the plastic skid plate to the frame rails.
Seal The Oil Filter, Put Oil On The Black Part. Just coat it.
Now, fill the engine back up with oil. These engines take 7 quarts of 5w30 motor oil. I usually purchase 1 5 quart jug and 2 single quarts and put it all in. Once you have put the required amount of oil in the motor, check the dipstick to make sure that the engine has the proper amount of oil in it. If all checks out, replace the 710 cap and enjoy the rest of your day!
